Ipratropium is an alkaloidal anti-cholinergic drug. It is synthetically derived from atropine. Like other cholinolytics, ipratropium also competitively inhibit cholinergic receptors (mostly muscarinic receptors)

Synthesis:

Ipratropium bromide can be easily synthesized in one step. Atropine is selected as starting material. Add Isopropyl bromide to atropine. Ipratropium bromide is produced.

Mechanism of Action:

Competitively bind to cholinergic receptors and inhibits the action of acetylcholine and other cholinergic drugs.

Uses:

In the inhalation therapy to produce dilation of bronchial smooth muscle for acute asthmatic attacks.

Adverse Effects:

  • Dryness of mouth, Bitter taste
  • Glaucoma
  • Urethral spasm
